Spring break is just around the corner and unless you have a vacation planned, you may be wondering how to keep the kids busy at home for the week. Here is a list of a few of our favorite springtime activities to keep the kids moving, creative and away from electronics!
Crafts
Get creative with your kids over spring break and make some crafts! With warmer weather just around the corner, your kids can spend the day making homemade kites. There aren’t a lot of materials needed to make a kite, and the process is fairly simple. You can make kites out of plastic or paper bags – whatever you have laying around the house! We love making them out of paper bags, though, so then the kids can color and decorate their kites to personalize them. This is also a great chance to teach your kids about recycling & reusing materials!
If the weather isn’t cooperating for outdoor crafts, there are plenty of things you can make indoors. With warmer weather heading our way soon – it’s not too early to start thinking of gardening! Flower pots can be decorated with paint, stickers, felt, and jewels – just to name a few. Have your kids help get your garden started while you help them get their creativity going. Don’t want to worry about gathering supplies? Then check out The Potter’s Shop for paint your own pottery.

Inline Skating
Spring weather in the Midwest can be unpredictable. In case of bad weather you can still enjoy your spring break indoors at Skate City in Rice Lake. Over break, Skate City will hold extra sessions from 1:30-4pm. The admission for children 3-5 is $4 and for ages 6 and up is $6. Each admission includes a free roller skate rental as well. If you aren’t looking to go skating, Skate City also has an indoor playland called “Uptown Playland”. Admission to Uptown Playland is $2 and is designed for those 3-12 years of age.
Get Outside
Rice Lake is home to amazing trails for you and your family to get out and enjoy the outdoors. The Cedar Side Trail is great for kids as it is fully paved and you can choose the length of your walk. From .7 miles to 3.7 miles, the Cedar Side Trail can be enjoyed as a quick walk outside or a leisurely way to spend your morning. Running along the Red Cedar River, this trail has beautiful views and benches along the river where you can rest and enjoy the scenery.
If you are looking to spend all day out on a trail, the Tuscobia State Trail – just North of Rice Lake – has 74 miles of trail waiting for you. Depending on the weather, you can use the trail to go hiking, snowshoeing, mountain biking, ride your ATV and even go horseback riding!
Did you know that Rice Lake has numerous public parks? Create a checklist of your favorite parks, or pick new ones. Visit a different park each day and enjoy a new activity each time. Enjoy a hike, a picnic, or a game of catch!
Plan a “Staycation”
Just because you aren’t going out of town doesn’t mean that you can’t have a vacation, too. Whether you already live in Rice Lake, or are coming from a different city in Wisconsin – Rice Lake is a great place to get away and relax with your kids. From bowling to museums, Rice Lake has activities to keep the whole family busy. In fact, the Tactical Escape 101 puzzle room is an engaging, family-fun activity that’ll get everyone thinking.
At Amerivu Inn in Rice Lake, each room has a flat screen TV with cable, a refrigerator, microwave and free wireless internet. In case of a March blizzard, Amerivu has a heated indoor pool where your kids can play all day long. They have several dining options nearby including their own on-site bar and lounge, the Norske Nook Restaurant and Bakery, and the Lehman’s Supper Club.
Scavenger Hunt
Putting together a scavenger hunt is easy to do and can keep your kids busy for hours. All you need to do is put together a list of items for the kids to collect. The scavenger hunt can take place in your own house, in the backyard, at Rice Lake parks, and around your neighborhood!
Looking to make the hunt a little more difficult? Turn the list of items to find into riddles. That way, your kids will need to take the time to decipher what items they need to find before they can go find them. Don’t forget to give your kids a bag to put the collected items in!
Reading
Spring break is a great time for you and your children to relax with a book. Even though school is out, encourage your kids to read while at home by giving reading an incentive. Visit the Rice Lake Public Library to get started on a new series of books. Once you find a new series that your child will enjoy, check out the first book from the library and let them know if they can finish the book within the week, you’ll go and buy them the second book in the series!
